ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department worked with the families of homicide victims to launch a cold case website earlier this month to hopefully find new leads for hundreds of cases.

It was a beautiful afternoon, and Danita Forney and her daughter Akasha visited her late son Da’Marri Shaw at the Falls Cemetery in Greece.

What You Need To Know

  • The Rochester Police Department worked with the families of homicide victims to launch a cold case website earlier this month to hopefully find new leads for hundreds of cases

  • With 554 unsolved homicides in Rochester, Danita Forney hopes this website does a lot of good for a lot of families

  • Her son Da’Marri Shaw was only 15 when he was shot and killed during a home invasion at a friend’s house

  • A suspect was never identified or charged with the crime

“Da’Marri, he was a silly boy,” Forney said. “I mean, he played around so much he’d make you laugh when you were down.”

Shaw was only 15 when he was shot and killed during a home invasion at a friend’s house. His friend Brent Coley was killed too.

“It hurts bad to lose a child,” Forney said. “It’s like a part of me had left. My heart was broken.”

It’s been thirteen years later, and the case has grown cold. A suspect was never identified or charged with the crime.

“It hurts,” Forney said. “I have my days, I cry, I get depressed.”

But thanks to a new cold case website launched by the Rochester Police Department, Danita says she feels something she hasn’t in a long time.

“I felt hope,” Forney said. “I was glad that they did that because that’s what we need. Especially for the people beside me, we need hope, we need justice.”

The website is a place to feature cold cases in the area, and get tips, and also provide a space for loved ones to grieve.

“It feels to let other people know they’re not going through this alone,” Akasha Steward, Shaw’s sister, said. “That they’re not the only families who lost a loved one.”

And with 554 unsolved homicides in Rochester, Danita hopes this website does a lot of good for a lot of families.

“I hope to bring justice, that’s what I want,” Forney said. “Justice.”

“And closure,” Steward continued. “Not just for our family, but the other people out there going through the same situation.”

Da’Marri Shaw and Brent Coley were killed on Wilkins Street in February of 2008. Anyone with information about this cold case or any others can visit www.rochesternyunsolved.com.
