ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department and University of Rochester campus police say a man attempted to sexually assault a U of R student early Saturday morning. Police now have a suspect in custody.

Around 12:30 a.m., police say a suspect approached a female student from behind who was walking near Genesee Valley Park. A physical confrontation ensued, with the student fighting off the attacker, according to police.

Officials say the suspect grabbed the victim’s phone and then fled the scene on foot. The student then alerted University of Rochester Public Safety officers.

The UORPS and RPD later detained and arrested Courtney Barber, 31, and charged him with first-degree attempted rape, third-degree robbery, fourth-degree stalking and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

The U of R says Barber has no ties to the university.
