ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Two families lost their home in a fire Thursday morning in Rochester.
The flames broke out in a house on Sherwood Avenue.
One neighbor tells Spectrum News he helped stop a woman from going back inside the burning building before crews arrived.
"When she opened the door and I saw the black smoke, I knew you can't survive the black smoke. So she ran in," said Justin Micciche. "I told her not to. I went to go step in there and I pulled her back. When she got to the top of the stairs, I pulled her back. I carried her down and another kid met us there, and we went out the door."
Rochester firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the second floor. Crews went in immediately to search for children reported to be in the house, but didn't find anyone.
The flames became so intense, firefighters were forced out of the house to get it under control.
No one was hurt, but the house sustained extensive damage.
The Red Cross is assisting the three adults and three children who live there.
