An upstate woman and a woman from New York City are the latest to die from a vaping-related illness, according to the New York State Department of Health.

Their names have not been released, but health officials say one woman is from Ontario County and was in her 50s. She actually died in Monroe County. The New York City woman was in her 20s.

While health officials say both cases are still under investigation, they have determined both deaths are vaping-related based on an extensive review. These two cases bring the total number of vaping-related deaths in New York state to four and the national number to 60.

Ontario County Health Director Mary Beer offers condolences to the families and urges people to avoid using vaping products.

"It's not a regulated industry, so you don't know what you're putting in your lungs," said Beer.

Beer says despite the effort to educate the public about possible vaping dangers, the use of vape products is on the rise.

"We are trying to educate the best that we can. Our public health educator has been in every school, meeting with the children and the youth to get the message out that this is not a safe practice," she said.
