Brighton police say two people are dead and one child is in critical condition after they were hit by a car on Edgewood Drive Wednesday morning.

The vehicle left the roadway, striking a telephone pole on the east side of the road and then a female pedestrian who was walking on the sidewalk with three young children, according to Brighton police.

The female pedestrian, who was babysitting the three children, died at the scene, according to police. Two of the three children she was babysitting were also struck by the vehicle.

One 9-year-old has died at a hospital, while another 2-year-old is in critical condition, according to police. The third child was not struck and was released to family friends.

The crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.

According to investigators, the driver of the car was cooperating with police at the scene. They say a small child was inside the car at the time of the crash but neither the child nor the driver was hurt.

The car also struck a utility pole, causing power outages in the area.
