Rochester firefighters credit working smoke detectors for saving the lives of a mother and daughter during a fire on Arnett Boulevard Thursday night.

Officials say a woman upstairs in the home heard an alarm go off around 9:30 p.m. and found flames coming from the first floor.

She was able to grab her daughter and get out safely.

Fire crews contained the flames to the first floor where there is serious damage.

There's also heat and smoke damage in the rest of the house.

The Red Cross is helping the three people who live there with a place to stay.
