Candidates in New York’s 25th Congressional District are hoping to replace a progressive icon. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter passed away earlier this year while still in office. She had served for more than three decades. The district includes most of Monroe County.

Joe Morelle is the deputy majority leader of the New York State Assembly. He says he’s running for Congress to work with the community to “pick up Louise Slaughter’s mantle and fight to protect the fundamental ideals we all share.” His priorities include health care, gun reform and the economy.
Health care: Supports the "Medicare for All" single-payer system.
Economy: Supports business tax cuts and credits to help ease the burden on local business owners.
Gun reform: Supports enacting gun laws similar to New York’s SAFE Act at the federal level.
Dr. Jim Maxwell is the chief of neurosurgery at Rochester General Hospital. He says he’s running for Congress because “we owe it to the next generation to end the status-quo in Washington and fix the mess our leaders have gotten us into." His priorities include controlling the national debt, health care, and protecting the Second Amendment.
Health care: Supports a patient-centered system.
Economy: Supports regulatory relief and the recently enacted Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
Gun Reform: Supports implementing “red flag” orders and enhanced background checks.
