City Councilor Jan Regan is the projected winner in the Democratic primary race for Geneva mayor.
This year’s race has sparked some political divisions in the city of Geneva after the Geneva Democratic Committee gave their support to Regan, and Democratic incumbent Mayor Steve Valentino running with the endorsement of the city’s Republican committee.
“I have a feeling that this also speaks to the ploy that was used to be endorsed by the Republican Party and still feel the need to be on the ticket twice. The people didn’t want that, you know, and I think that was part of the reaction tonight,” said Regan.
Regan won Tuesday's mayoral primary with more than 71% of the city’s votes. She will be in the running for Geneva mayor in November, but because Valentino received the Republican endorsement, he will also still be on November’s ballot.
“To get that kind of a resounding vote, it feels just the best because you know we worked so hard for it, but working hard for it isn’t enough. People have to want it just like you want it, and that's the voice we heard tonight, so I’m really happy and I’m looking forward to the rest of the campaign,” Regan said.
