Law enforcement at the local and state levels are working together to try to solve these swatting events, and they are getting some help from the federal level.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is working with other law enforcement agencies in an effort to solve these swatting crimes and prevent more threats.

“The same week that New York State is dealing with the swatting instances to schools across the state is the same week that there was an actual school shooting a deadly school shooting down in Nashville, Tennessee. So law enforcement has to treat every one of these incidents as a real event until we can determine it's not real," said Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Buffalo Field Office, Jeremy Bell.

The FBI is part of the massive law enforcement effort involved in the recent sweep of swatting threats against schools.

“Swatting is when a subject calls law enforcement to report an emergency, or a threat to life incident, with the idea of getting law enforcement to respond to that incident, which actually isn't occurring," said ASAC Bell.

He says while swatting has been around for some time, it’s a crime that is evolving and becoming more sophisticated.

“We're seeing efforts to spoof telephone numbers and VoIP technologies and these things are used to anonymize the offenders and authenticate their identity,” he said.

With numerous swatting-type threats across the state this past week, the FBI can step in and look for any potential connection to these cases or others in different parts of the country or the world.

“It's not just an issue plaguing us here in Monroe County, but throughout New York State and ultimately around the country. And so one of the FBI's jobs is to look at each of these situations individually, but also collectively in the aggregate to see if we can find redundancies and replication in different events," said ASAC Bell.

He assures the community at large that each and every swatting case is taken seriously.

"With respect to the faculty and the students and the victims, the swatting instances - the FBI is here for you,” he said. “Your local and state law enforcement, first responders are there for you. We will always take these seriously, we will always respond, and will always do our best to make sure you are safe.”

While ASAC Bell says the crimes may be getting more sophisticated, the abilities of the FBI and other law enforcement are also more sophisticated.

The FBI has hundreds of offices around the country along with more than 70 FBI offices, or legal attaches, in other countries to help work these cases.
