Gas prices are continuing on a downward trend. However, for most drivers, prices are still not falling fast enough, and officials say scammers are taking advantage of the situation.
The national average is now down to $4.69 per gallon according to AAA. That's much lower than a month ago when the average was $4.97 for a gallon of regular gas.
In New York, the state average has fallen to $4.81 per gallon. That's a $.16 drop from Friday.
The New York DMV says scammers are sending people text messages falsely claiming that the state is offering $1,500 rebates as a result of high fuel prices. The agency says the government does not send out text messages asking for personal information.
