ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Survivors of domestic violence were treated to a full salon day on Monday with the help of several Rochester groups and businesses.

People's Choice Kitchen owner Van Stanley organized the event Sisters Giving Smiles. She says it's in memory of her late sister who was a survivor of domestic abuse.

Those invited got their hair done at Wade & Me Salon on Culver Road.

"It's amazing," said Stanley. "A young lady was over there shedding some tears just to know that someone would take the time to pamper them. They never had something like this happen before. It means the world to me to put smiles on as many faces as possible. I truly believe it takes a village and I have a village behind me to help with everything."

Stanley says she hopes to make this a yearly event and is looking to expand it.

So far, 13 other salons have expressed interest.
