ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester nonprofit is preparing festive hotel rooms for the homeless, the second year an event that is now national.

For those without a home for the holidays, an army of Santa’s helpers is working hard to correct that.

"We never know what someone may be going through," Karen Lee Byfield, a volunteer with Champions of Change, said. "So it’s just important to let them know during this season of love and giving, we give back. It’s important to give back and share."

Byfield has been a volunteer with Champions of Change since its inception seven years ago, a nonprofit that started putting up homeless families in hotel rooms for Christmas just last year.

"It’s an opportunity to be a blessing to our community," Byfield said. "Some people are not as fortunate as others, and anytime we serve our community, we’re actually serving God."

The organization is helping 20 families in Rochester this year, each room getting set up with decor and personalized gifts for the children.

"I think it just gives us a chance to share what we all sometimes might take for granted: the warmth of a home, cozying up with the family and watching a movie together, some gifts that are specific to that child," Lauren Murray, the Champions of Change coordinator for Rochester, said.

And speaking of children, many of the volunteers were children themselves.

"I like doing it with friends that we can do it together. And then it takes faster," 7-year-old Emily Conlan said.

They are all excited to give back on this most magical of holidays.

"It makes people happy because everybody is happy when they wake up on Christmas morning seeing all the presents. So it’s really fun," Annabelle Conlan, 9, said.
