After Monroe County officials announced earlier this week they had received about 750,000 at-home rapid COVID-19 tests to give to residents for free, municipalities began to distribute them this weekend.

Not too long after, the city of Rochester opened its distribution site at the Adams Street R-Center, Mike Dupin made sure to pick up a test.

"I actually went and bought tests last week for ourselves and we were really glad to hear, they were giving out free ones," said Dupin.

Kendra Hayle-Laboy, director of Center Operations for Rochester's Recreation Department, believes this giveaway is important because there will be more indoor events as the weather gets colder.

"The delta variant, omicron and just being as safe as possible, as we know we are all going to be gathering for the holiday season. You know, you have your rapid test. In 15 minutes, take the test, make sure everyone is safe and enjoy family and friends." said Hayle-Laboy.

Dupin got the test to prepare for the holidays.

"I'm getting ready to go visit my parents who are out of town and not of great health," said Dupin. "So it gives us some reassurance before we go to make sure that we are in good shape."

As soon as the town of Brighton opened up its test kit distribution site, a lot of cars were lined up ready to get it.

Town Supervisor Bill Moehle says he was happy to see so many people there.

"It's a sign that people are taking this seriously and that's important," said Moehle. "I know people are frustrated. People are tired. It's hard to put on the mask every day. Testing is a part of why we are going to stop the spread."

James Silverman was one of the many who came out.

"Too many people getting sick and Monroe County is rising faster than the sun rises in the morning and we just gotta stop it," Silverman said. "We gotta get back to normalcy."

For Silverman and many others, family serves as the main priority to get tested.

"I don't wanna spread it," Silverman said. "My grandkids come over every weekend and they are 5 and 11. I wanna make sure that I don't inadvertently get and maybe give it to them or if they should happen to get it, then I could spread it to other people."
