BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Local lawmakers are hoping to secure millions in federal funding to make Brighton's busiest streets more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly.

Congressman Joe Morelle says more than $8 million is being included in a new infrastructure bill to create a path along Elmwood Avenue.

The new path would connect with four existing trails, helping to make transportation for bicyclists and pedestrians safer and easier across the area.

"Because of the town of Brighton and their planning and their active transportation models, and looking at multi-modal models, this project was ready to go," said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. "So when Congressman Morelle is looking for opportunities for us to invest in infrastructure, here and around the county, we have a perfect project ready to go here in the town of Brighton that's going to serve thousands and thousands of residents."

The funding is included in the House's Invest in America Act, which has been passed out of the transportation committee.
