ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Red Wings, now affiliated with the Washington Nationals, came out to Frontier Field for the first time to practice before the 2021 season begins.
The new prospects practiced pitching and hitting on Sunday.
It's been more than 600 days since the Red Wings have taken to the field.
"It's the home of the Wings and it's great to have them back in town," said Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason "So great to have them back here and so great to kickoff the Washington Nationals era of Red Wings baseball. I know the players are really excited about playing some real games against other teams."
Mason says they have had a great working relationship with the Nationals since becoming their affiliate last November, and added that this is the first time anyone from the organization has seen Frontier Field.
As for fans coming back, Mason explained that they can only bring in so many.
"It will definitely be different, our capacity right now is 33%, but with the space that we have, we can only get to 22%, or just a little bit over 3,000 fans," said Mason.
Even in limited capacity, he believes the fans will add a lot to the game.
"It just brings that energy of the ball park back to life,” said Mason. “And I think that was something that was sorely lacking last year during the season. I think the players feed off of that energy and I think they can't wait to have fans in the ballpark."
The Red Wings play their first game of the season on Tuesday, but the first home game won't be held until May 18.
"Tickets go on sale for the first time on May 10 at 10 a.m., so mark that on your calendar,” Mason said. “Tickets are probably going to go pretty quick as we only have 3,000 of them available."
The official roster of the 2021 Red Wings was announced on Monday.
