PITTSFORD, N.Y. — ​Grab your fishing pole, tacklebox, jigs, and worms, because pre-registration for the 2021 Riedman Foundation Trout Derby at Powder Mills Park to benefit the fish hatchery is underway now. The Trout Derby is Thursday, April 1.

What You Need To Know

  • The Trout Derby at Powder Mills Park is Thursday, April 1 from 7 a.m. to noon

  • $5 per registrant over the age of 8 years

  • Due to social distancing practices, there will be no merchandise, raffles, food or beverages being sold at Powder Horn Lodge on the day of our derby

  • Event proceeds support the Riedman Fish Hatchery that restocks Irondequoit Creek with trout annually

COVID-19 canceled so many events last year, including the Trout Derby that is a tradition for so many families.

"I am excited to be able to be a part of it," said Jason Hanselman from the Fish Hatchery at Power Mills Park.

The hatchery raises thousands of rainbow and brown trout, and then releases them into Irondequoit Creek ahead of opening day of trout fishing.

When Jason Hanselman isn’t fishing in the Finger Lakes, he's working at the fish hatchery.

"New York State is really truly blessed with the amount of water we have. It is really incredible fishing. There are so many species you can catch in the state. Last year was really different not having the derby, and I know a lot of the fishermen are excited, as well. It has been kind of a long wait," said Hanselman.

Jason Caverly and his daughter stopped by the hatchery to feed the fish. He grew up fishing for trout along the banks of Irondequoit Creek.

"It is good to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. Trout's fun. It’s a fun fish to catch and they are very finicky. They’re also a good fish to eat and put back into the stream to populate more. It is great to bring the kids out," said Caverly.

There is a $500 grand prize for the largest trout caught on Derby Day. It's open to anglers of all ages. Registration is $5 for participants ages 8 and up. Proceeds benefit the Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park. You must pre-register for the event.
