Monroe County Sheriff's deputies have identified the swimmer whose body was found in Irondequoit Bay Sunday night as a 49-year-old man, but have not yet released his name.

The sheriff's office says its scuba unit recovered the body was discovered around 8 p.m. Sunday night. The update was not made public until Monday, out of respect for family members who were coming from outside the Rochester area.

Officials say a family took a pontoon boat out on Sunday, anchored in the bay, and then began swimming. One of the swimmers went under just after 2 p.m., and did not resurface.

Authorities deployed a scuba team, several boats, and a helicopter to search for the victim. Choppy water conditions made the search more difficult.

The name of the victim is not being released until a positive identification is made by the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office.

Last month, a man went missing about a mile-and-a-half north of the Irondequoit Bay outlet in Lake Ontario after he jumped off a boat and went under and did not resurface. They have yet to recover his body.
