Conkey Cruisers gave away dozens of bikes along with tennis rackets and balls this weekend at Conkey Corner Park.

"COVID-19 was the only a physical attack and it attacked so many families, mentally, financially, spiritually. I just could not in good faith let those bicycles sit for a year when people needed them,"  said Theresa Bowyck, the organization's executive director.

Volunteers with Conkey's Cruisers fixed up bikes to deliver to local families. Bowyck says the theme is to "Roll with Kindness."

"It gives us an opportunity to [tell] another person that I care about what's happening. I care that you can't walk into a store and buy a bicycle, I care that you don't have fitness equipment ... because I have access, I can share with you," Bowyck explained.

Volunteer Jacynta Harris is happy to be a part of addressing the bike shortage, created by the pandemic, while also promoting health.

"This is a community program right here in my neighborhood. I work over here. I know most of the people in the program. You see a need and you know you can fill a need so you do what you have to do to make sure people can get what they need." said Harris.

Natasha Wright and two of her kids received their bikes from this giveaway.

"Ever since I joined the Conkey Cruisers, I've been losing weight riding bikes ... It's really good for the kids, those two hours that we do, keep the kids off the streets and we are riding the trail," said Wright.

Normally, the group would organize a bike ride for the community but because of COVID-19, Conkey Cruisers found a different way to connect with its members.

"We can share that a family is cycling to the beach one day through social media. We can share those pictures and videos through social media of how we are still actively together when we can't physically be together," said Bowyck.
