  • Many town recreation departments will be proceeding with camps
  • Changes will be made to camp structures with safety in mind

And for local Park and Recreation Departments, it was a bit of good news.

"Today was that day we had planned for, and kind of have been hoping for since this all started," Town of Webster Commissioner of Parks and Rec Chris Bilow says.

Gov. Cuomo announced that at the end of this month summer day camp programs will be allowed to open, a great opportunity for kids who have been self-isolating for months.

"What camp does is give kids an option to play and develop in a different kind of setting," Bilow says.

When it comes time for camps open, Bilow says they’ll be ready.

"There’s going to be a different structure on how camp is done this year. Obviously we're going to be following the guidelines that come out from the health department," he says.

The Town of Perinton is also waiting on guidance before it moves forward. In Irondequoit, Town Supervisor Dave Seeley says they’ve been planning ahead just like Webster.

"The safety of the kids is paramount, and it’s going to be our compass throughout summer," Seeley says. "It’s incumbent on us to ensure their safety."

And while both expect day camps will look quite different this year, they’re both glad that, for the kids and staff, a sense of normalcy will be returning.

"There’s gonna be a lot of, I'd say an overabundance of caution taken. What you're going to see is instances where kids will probably be with the same group of kids and the same counselor, and you’re not going to see them intermingling," Seeley says.

"We know it’s going to be different. We all know it’s going to look different, but at the end of the day as much as we can make it a camp program, that's what we’re going to do," Bilow adds. "And we look forward to having that normal routine again."

Both towns are still accepting camp registrations, which can be found on their respective town websites. Perinton hopes to open its registration Monday.

Meanwhile, the governor says the state is working on a plan for 'sleep away' camps, and has not yet said if those will be reopen this summer.
