While libraries are closed because of COVID-19, Hoag Library in Albion has found another way to extend its reach within the community.

Betty Sue Miller, Hoag Library director, says they've boosted its Wi-Fi signal to where residents can access the internet for free from the parking lot.

"We have a situation here where a number of people do not have access to broadband and can not get Wi-Fi in their homes," Miller explained. "Now we can feed half the town with the capabilities that we have with the Wi-Fi connection."

Miller adds that since the pandemic started, more residents have signed up for library cards. This also helps the library tout its digital database which is now offering unlimited access during the pandemic.

"It's given us an opportunity to really let them know some of the things they may have not explored before because they can't come in and get the book. They can try to get them in a different way," said Miller.

Not only with children's storybook readings live on Facebook, but also encouraging patrons to go on a bear hunt by trying to spot where the library hid a stuffed bear or help solve the mystery of who ruined priceless library books through emailed clues.

"I think we are doing to best job we can and the employees here have bent over backward to try to do things for people. Librarians went into this field because they are helpers and no matter what the circumstances are we try to do as much as we can," said Miller.
