An affordable housing complex for veterans in Rochester will soon reach its rental application phase.

Dozens of veterans were selected through a public lottery Tuesday to be first priority. Veterans Outreach Center and Conifer Realty of Rochester also established a waiting list for the $10 million affordable housing development called Liberty Landing.

It's the first housing development of its kind in Monroe County, and will offer a primary placement for veterans and a secondary preference for families on the public housing wait list.

"Out of 125 or so received,” said Veterans Outreach Center Executive Director Laura Stradley. “About 85 of them were veterans. There are 33 units all together. Ten of them are completely set aside for vets who are either service connected, disabled, at risk, homeless. The other 23 will be a part of today’s lottery process.”

The property will include a community room, fitness center, security, case managers on site and more.

“To be able to not only have the full spectrum of housing needs for veterans, but then also for our staff to be on site case managing anyone who needs that level of care is incredible," Stradley said.

David Rivers, of Rochester, is a four-year veteran who was thrilled to hear his name called at the lottery.

“I’m looking for a little more security,” said Rivers. “I toured the place while they were putting it up, looked very good. I like its location. I like the fact that it has a lot of amenities.”

Conifer Reality hopes to have residents move in by early February.
