City officials have submitted an emergency action to "stabilize the finances of the Rochester City School District."

A letter sent to city council Sunday afternoon requests a vote and meeting on new legislation Monday. The letter, signed by Mayor Lovely Warren and City Council President Loretta Scott, said the bill would "establish a fiscal stability authority to oversee the fiscal management of the Rochester City School District due to recent budgetary concerns."

The moves comes after an internal audit uncovered a $30 million budget deficit. RCSD Superintendent Terry Dade attributes the shortfall to overspending on employee benefits, teacher substitutes, charter tuition, retirement benefits and contract transportation. However, he said it’s too early to say where cuts will be made to make up for the money.

Dade is expected to give another update on how things stand at an audit committee meeting on Tuesday, October 8.

The special meeting is set to take place Monday, September 30 at 2 p.m.
