In celebration of World Milk Day and New York State Breakfast Day, the American Dairy Association North East and Rochester City School District partnered to bring hot, healthy meals into the classroom of Theodore Roosevelt School Number 43.

School officials, a local dairy farmer and former Buffalo Bills punter Brian Moorman helped hand out a "first class breakfast" on the first day of this new program.

"We bring it to them instead of them coming to the cafeteria. They can sit down in the classroom, enjoy the breakfast in a calm environment so they can be ready to learn," said Dele Akinniyi, school nutrition director for RCSD.

Another topic on many minds today was the proposal of the New York Department of Education to ban chocolate milk within the school classroom. Students of a second grade class on the campus overwhelmingly preferred chocolate milk.

Local dairy farmer Tash Stein said it has been scientifically proven that chocolate milk does not affect the health of kids.

“It is 4 grams of sugar in their total diet. It’s a drop in the bucket ... it's 36 calories,” Stein said. “Knowing how many calories we have to get in these children to perform, especially early in the day, it is absolutely fine in the diet, and that has been proven over and over again.”

The New York State Farm Bureau says that studies have shown that flavored milk is not connected to weight gain, but instead adds to growth and development.
