A five-year-old boy and elderly woman are dead following an apparent drowning near South Mays Point Road in the town of Tyre.

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office received a missing person report Friday night for two people who didn’t return from a fishing trip.

Upon responding to the area, deputies located the vehicle and fishing equipment. Following an aerial search with the New York State Police helicopter, the bodies were located and recovered by divers.

The victims were identified by deputies as Christoph Jones, 5, and Essie Hall, 81. According to investigators, Hall was a close family friend who enjoyed spending time with Christoph and taking him fishing.

It’s believed the pair slipped off the bank into the water. No foul play is suspected but the drowning remains under investigation.
