A 2019 graduate of Penfield High School has serious injuries after falling through the roof of a school in Penfield.

Monroe County sheriff’s deputies said two teens were on top of Bay Trail Middle School on Scribner Road just after midnight Thursday when one of them fell through a skylight and fell 28 feet to the gym floor below.

Deputies said he was unresponsive when they got to him. The injured teen’s friend — who the district confirmed is also a 2019 graduate — called 911 and told police he and his friend had been lying on the rooftop skylight to smoke marijuana when his friend fell through the window.

"I would play over there all the time and we were all like scared to even do that like that was never even a thought in our minds, so I don't really know, maybe it just seems like enticing to someone, but we never really played on it," said Caroline Niederst, who lives behind school property.

Another neighbor, Don, grew up and attended Penfield schools.

"Kids are kids and kids are going to do adventurous things and it's just the nature of people," he said.

“We are deeply upset over this tragic accident and our thoughts are with both of the young men and their families,” said Superintendent Thomas Putnam.

The teen was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital where he is listed in guarded condition. The other teenage boy was taken in for questioning.

Penfield school officials continue to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

Deputies said charges may be pending.
