Local police departments are asking for everyone to be prepared and vigilant in case of a mass shooting. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says your survival may depend on whether or not you have a plan.

1. Run

  • Evacuate whether others agree or not
  • Leave your belongings behind
  • Help others escape, if possible
  • Prevent others from entering the area
  • Call 911 when you're safe

2. Hide

  • Lock and/or barricade the door
  • Silence your cell phone
  • Hide behind large objects
  • Remain very quiet
  • Make sure you still have options for movement

3. Fight

  • Attempt to incapacitate the shooter
  • Be aggressive
  • Improvise with weapons
  • Commit to your actions

Sgt. James Coughlin with the Gates Police Department says he wants people to remember those three points. He's worked in law enforcement for 17 years, and says there's an increase in active shooter training across the nation.

“Moving targets are hard to hit,” said Coughlin. “If people are able to escape or run, we'd like them to hide. That means finding either a room they can lock their selves in or barricade the door. If they can't find any cover and they aren't able to escape, fight. If your life depends on it and there's no other option, there's no sense in sitting there and waiting to be shot.”

When Law enforcement arrives:

  • Remain calm and follow instructions
  • Keep your hands visible at all times
  • Avoid pointing or yelling
