Summer day camps for kids are getting started this week.

Here's one that's on the water.

BayCreek Paddling Center on Empire Boulevard in Penfield has Paddlesports Camp for kids ages 7 to 13.

The camp gets kids out on Irondequoit Creek kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding.

Ken Altfather has owned BayCreek for 23 years.

"I think we have a tendency or propensity to want to be around water,” Altfather said. “It just kind of relaxes and soothes and restores us, so that is what we do here. We help people do that. We sell them canoes, kayaks or paddleboards or we let them rent and enjoy this wonderful resource we have here.”

It’s the first time at camp for Samantha Fullerton, 7.

“This will be the first time I ever paddle a kayak on my own. I’m excited,” she said.

Camp instructor Casey Arthur canoed 800 miles on the Mississippi River.  She knew a desk job was not for her, so she’s glad to be out on the water with the kids.

“Safety is our first priority. We want everybody to have fun and learn new skills,” Arthur said. “The wind is going to make these kids look like sails today. My favorite part is the kids and watching them get up on a paddleboard.”

BayCreek offers guided tours on about a four-mile stretch of Irondequoit Creek to Ellison Park.
