Pick up a copy of Lake Affect Magazine and readers will notice it has local roots.

The magazine, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is independently owned and published in Rochester.

It showcases art and works from local writers, poets, painters and photographers.

Publisher and editor Michelle Cardulla just completed and printed Volume 55 of the bi-annual magazine.

“I haven’t even scratched the surface of the interesting and creative people in this area, so it is easy to find interesting people,” she said.

The anniversary issue is dedicated to inspiring, creative and powerful women.  It features 12 women who work and live in Greater Rochester.

Each one shares their “super power,” what influenced them, their advice for young women and who their “shero” is and why.

“We have a firefighter, we have a dancer, writers, poets and community activists,” Cardulla said.

The cover art is all done by local artists. The anniversary issue features work by artist Noma Bliss.

“I think, as women, we look at how much we do,” Bliss said. “We go to work, we come home, we take care of the children and we do so much. It takes a lot of strength to do it. This cover has a woman with boxing gloves on and it shows how hard it and we have to put a fight and be inspiring to family and other women and be a role model to young girls.”

"It is all forms of art; fiction, poetry, photography, painting and interviews,” Cardulla said. “Cool people are doing good things for the community and helping out. I just love art so anything art and there is so much to cover, so I never get tired of that."

The magazine can be found at Lori's Natural Foods, Abundance Food Co-Op and Statement Boutique on Park Avenue.

Cardulla will also be handing out free copies of Lake Affect Magazine at the Rochester Jazz Festival, which opens Friday.
