A Rochester City Council seat up for grabs in this month's primary lies in the south district. The seat was previously held by Adam McFadden, who last month pleaded guilty to wire fraud and filing a false tax return.

McFadden was replaced by then Monroe County legislator LaShay Harris to fill out the rest of his term. Harris will now face opponent Ann Lewis in the Democratic primary.

Harris previously served as the president of the 19th Ward Community Association.

"During that time, my tenure there, I continued to work as an advocate for neighborhood issues," said Harris. "I worked on giving us an opportunity to give our neighborhood the designation of being part of the national registry of historic places."

Lewis is currently a member of the Corn Hill Neighborhood Association board and a special education teacher in the Rochester City School District. She formerly worked as a victim's service worker for the Rochester Police Department, and as a rehabilitation counselor at the jail.

"All these opportunities have allowed me to be around people who need someone to be a voice for them," said Lewis. "I'm not a politician by any means, that's just my passion, to help my community."

Harris is the endorsed Democratic candidate.

"Go by my track record, and go by what people say about me that are in the organizations that I work for. They can tell you a little bit more about my tenacity and my passion for what I do," said Harris.

Regardless of the primary results, Harris will serve the remainder of McFadden's term which expires at the end of the year.

"I am very confident I'm going to win," said Lewis. "I am who I am and that's what you see, a genuine individual who truly cares."

Polls are open noon to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25. For more information about the upcoming local election, check out our voter guide.
