As leaders in Orange County push state lawmakers to take action against the measles outbreak, the county health commissioner is focusing on keeping summer camp kids and staff members healthy.

The order says any camp with a permit through the Orange County Health Department must require their campers and staff to have at least their first round of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine.

Included in the order:

  • Camps must maintain complete and accurate immunization records of staff and campers
  • Anyone who has not been vaccinated will not be allowed to attend
  • Camps must submit a list of staff and campers with birth dates and dates they were vaccinated

Failure to comply could result in legal action.

"One of our challenges is many of the camps actually hire their staff from overseas so we want to make sure the staff are also coming here and they have the vaccinations they're supposed to have," said Orange County Deputy Health Commissioner Christopher Ericson.

According to the orders, as long as the first dose of the vaccine is given before camp starts, that camper or staff member can still attend. However, the second dose must be given at least 28 days apart.

All camps will be required to submit a list with everyone's vaccination status. These new orders do not include medical exemptions.

"So if a person does have a medical condition, they can't get a vaccine, we would need to see a letter from their doctor and our staff would also have to review that to make sure it's appropriate," Ericson said.

One local camp owner is taking it a step further, regardless of medical exemptions.

"I sent out a letter to all the parents, letting them know the children had to be fully vaccinated. Even if I lose a couple of kids that don't have it, don't have the proper vaccinations, I'll lose a couple of kids. But I have to do what's right," said Scott Rosmarin, owner of Rosmarin's Day Camp.

There are currently 35 confirmed cases of measles in Orange County. Ericson says this order is not supposed to make people's lives more difficult, but simply keep them safer.
