Firefighters in Rochester braved the cold Sunday morning as they battled an apartment fire.

It happened on N. Clinton Ave just after 7:30 a.m.

Crews tell us a resident called 911 after trying to put out the fire at his apartment on his own. He reported smelling smoke for several hours before flames started in the walls.

Firefighters say nearby hydrants were buried with snow and it took several minutes to uncover them before they could get in and fight the flames.

Most of the damage was contained to the one unit, however the business below also suffered water damage.

At least eight residents were evacuated for the fire. No one was hurt.

The Red Cross has stepped in to help two residents who will not be able to live in their apartment until repairs are made.
