Few local cold cases have gone colder than the one State Police are reminding us of this week.

Inside the State Police Headquarters in Canandaigua, four boxes contain one woman's mystery. Jeremy Kierst has been trying to solve it the last four years.

"We just don't know what her life was like before," said Kierst, the investigator assigned to the 16-year-old case.

On August 29, 2002, a cable installer working along West Port Bay Road in Wolcott found a woman's naked body wrapped in a shower curtain, just off a boat launch access road.

Her remains were so decomposed, neither her identity nor cause of death could be determined.

"Obviously it was a homicide," Kierst said. "Unfortunately, we did not have enough information back at that point."

The woman, believed to be between 20 and 40-years-old, was also in the third trimester of pregnancy. That moved authorities to check hospitals, clinics and social service agencies.

"This woman was seven months pregnant at the time, so we're looking for a mother who might have come in for some kind of prenatal care," Kierst said.

After developing a sketch of her appearance in the weeks after her discovery, forensic artists produced a facial reconstruction of her appearance. It's believed she's either of African or Latino descent.

Fliers featuring the images of the casts have been posted across the region, especially near the part of Wayne County where she was found; a haven for seasonal migrant workers who fill farms and fields during the warmer months. But police do not believe she was from the area.

"But unfortunately, because we're not able to identify, we were not able to develop any leads, as far as family."

And it is closure for that family that most drives Kierst and authorities. Not one new lead has come in the last four years.
