The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help in a hit-and-run involving a beloved family pet.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday, a driver traveling east on Mendon Center Road in the town of Mendon struck and killed a horse then took off, according to police.

The horse’s grandfather was a Triple Crown winner, but the owners say they didn’t know that when they got him. To them, Ed was just a member of the family and now they are grieving his loss deeply.

While no one witnessed the accident, investigators believe damage from the accident may help them find the driver.

"Debris from the road would indicate the suspect vehicle was traveling eastbound on Mendon Center Road," Cpt. Paul DeLella said. "The debris would also indicate that the vehicle is somewhere between a 2010-2013 silver or gray Toyota Corolla.”

According to the MCSO, the car would have heavy damage, including a missing side mirror.

The family says seeking justice isn’t about pointing a finger. It's about letting everyone know you can’t just hit a beloved pet and leave it to suffer. They also wanted to thank all their neighbors and everyone who stopped to help after the accident.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
