The American Red Cross has stepped in to help six adults and a child after a chimney fire in Wayne County.

Flames sparked at the home shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday at a home directly across from the South Butler Fire Department. Neighboring fire companies were called in to help and together crews were able to contain the fire damage outside of the home.

At one point, a state trooper on scene had to get a homeowner who went back inside the burning building to save their pets and an oxygen tank.

"We have it happen a lot. People want go back in and get belongings or pets or think they can put the fire out,” said First Assistant Fire Chief Jeffery Teeter. “You know, when you call 911, what is a minute in time actually seems like 5 minutes in time. But yeah it’s probably not a safe thing to go back inside once you call the fire department.”

The home, which previously served as a nursing home, suffered smoke and water damage.

No one was hurt.
