A Rochester tradition has fizzled out: The annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display won’t be ringing in 2019.

“It was fun. I liked it, it was pretty and nice,” said 10-year-old Nevieha Crowder said.

The skies will be empty as the clock strikes midnight as the city has canceled the show.

“It’s disappointing,” said Kelly Mardo. “I don’t think they should cancel it.”

To put on the fireworks show and pay for the additional personnel and street closures, city officials said it cost around $30,000. Instead, $20,000 was diverted and invested in the inaugural ROC Holiday Village downtown.

In recent years, the crowds haven’t been as big for the fireworks display, but the Holiday Village has been a hit, drawing thousands of people over multiple weekends.

“It’s usually cold and people are doing so many other things on New Year’s," said Kurt Ketchum.

When asked, people had mixed reactions to the fireworks’ finale. Some believed it was a smart move by the city while others say they’re sad to lose a family tradition.

The city’s family celebration at the Riverside Convention Center will still take place this year, as usual.

It was not immediately clear whether the fireworks have had their last hurrah or if they could be reignited in the future, but officials said they look forward to the ROC Holiday Village becoming a new holiday tradition for years to come.
