Rochester Fire and Diving Crews spent the rush hour removing a body from the Genesee River near the Andrews Street Bridge.

The fire department said they arrived just before 5 p.m. after receiving a call from a passerby reporting the body in the water.

Two members of the Rochester Police Department scuba team aided in the recovery of the body, given that it might be deemed a crime scene later.

Crews say they believe the body is male and that he was in the water for some time before being discovered.

"One of the things that we did have to be aware of is the current from the river obviously,” said Amon Hudson, a spokesperson for the Rochester Fire Department. “We coordinated with RG&E. They're the ones who control the flow of the current. So we coordinated with them to gauge if the current needs to be adjusted in order to go in the water. So we did have to signify that before we let the police department or fire department go into the water."

The medical examiner’s office will now work to determine the man's cause of death.
