A former Boy Scout employee has been arrested and is accused of possessing child pornography.

Russell Ruth, 34, of Lyons, once worked with the Boy Scouts of America in the Seneca County town of Ovid.

Federal prosecutors say Yahoo reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in March that one of its subscribers uploaded five suspected images of child pornography.

Law enforcement was contacted and those files were allegedly traced back to Ruth's email address.

In June, a search warrant was executed where hundreds of images and videos of child pornography involving minor boys were found.

Ruth appeared in U.S. District Court Monday. He is being held until his next court appearance on Wednesday.

The Boy Scouts of America say there is no evidence of any improprieties happening anywhere within camp or any scout program.

In a statement it released about Ruth's arrest, Stephen Hoitt, Scout executive with the Seneca Waterways Council, called Ruth’s behavior “abhorrent and runs counter to everything for which the Boy Scouts of America stands. Upon learning of the investigation, we took immediate action to remove this individual and prohibit him from any future participation in our programs.”
