A global tech company`s decision to remain and expand in Rochester will save 185 jobs.

“We`ll have much improved quality because we don`t have to ship the products back and forth and the people here are actually higher quality conscious than the foundry that we were operating in,” said ON Semiconductor Senior Vice President, Mark Goranson.

ON Semiconductor unveiled a 7,700 square foot $4.3 million dollar state of the art manufacturing plant Wednesday.

The Eastman Business Park campus will be used as a testing and assembly factory for image sensors.

“An image sensor is the eye of the camera, so light goes through it to produce a picture,” said General Manager, Michael Miller.

The image sensors can be used for surveillance, photography and according to the company`s senior vice president, a key component for self-driving cars. ON Semiconductor employs more than 30,000 people worldwide and is looking for new hires for its Rochester location.

With the help of business and political leaders statewide, the company decided to stay in Rochester instead of relocating to Japan.

As a result, a total 185 workers were able to keep their jobs and 34 more positions were added.
