GREECE, N.Y. -- Some quick work by firefighters early Sunday morning helped stop flames from spreading throughout a Greece home.

Barnard and Ridge Road district firefighters were called to a house on California Drive off of Stone Road just after midnight.

When crews arrived, they say heavy smoke was coming from the home and two residents were just exiting.  Firefighters were able to make their way in and put the fire out before it was able to spread.

Fire officials say both residents are suffering from smoke inhalation.

"Smoke detectors went off, alerted the homeowners to the fire and they were able to make their escape and were coming out the side door as they arrived. I think one of the two will probably be transported to the hospital," said Chief John Nolan, Barnard Fire Department.

Firefighters say the residents can't live in the home for the time being because of some smoke and water damage. They say the damage is fixable.

The Red Cross is helping them for the time being.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
