The State Department of Transportation is helping the town of Irondequoit after a major fire destroyed its department of public works in 2016.
In a land swap, the state will sell the town a parcel of surplus land to build a new DPW building in exchange for another parcel of land the DOT can use for highway maintenance operations.
The former DPW building on Kings Highway was severely damaged by an accidental fire on Christmas Eve that lasted into Christmas morning.
The Titus Avenue building housed much of the town's equipment and the town's operation center.
The fire caused millions of dollars in damage. What remained from the fire had to be demolished.
The land swap agreement will give the town a 12 acre property southeast of the 590-104 interchange to build its new DPW.
In exchange, Irondequoit will give the transportation department about $4,500 and a 10.9 acre parcel off of route 590 south of East Ridge Road.
That property will be used as a staging area for highway operations and emergency response.
