ROCHESTER, N.Y. — In honor of Women’s History Month, a Rochester woman is sharing her journey from a cleaner to manager at the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House.
“It’s awesome, you really never know what you’re going to do, every day is different,” said Bianca Washington, office manager.
Bianca is known as the Jill of all trades on the job, because her duties include a lot. She inputs data, sends out mailers, sets up displays, and more.
“It’s pretty much whatever; it can be different things. I’ve mowed the lawn before; we help with snow removal; we pretty much all do that together as a team,” said Washington.
Bianca started working at the museum five years ago as a cleaner. She worked a few hours a week and later decided to search for another job, but her boss found out.
“And Deborah pulled me to the side and she’s like 'Bianca, can I speak to you?' My heart drops. I’m like 'I didn’t do anything wrong; like, why does the boss want to talk to me?' " said Washington. "I went in her office and got even more scared and she was like, 'I heard you want to look for a new job.' And I was like 'ahhh.' My heart dropped. It kind of surprised me, she was like 'well, I can offer you a permanent position,' because I was through a cleaning company, and I was only doing like six hours a week."
Without question, the mother of four accepted the new position with more pay and more hours to support her family.
“I had just started working, I would say maybe a year. My son was like 6 months, and then two years prior to that, I just really couldn’t get a job, so this was my first one in about two and a half, three years, and I was just really eager to work,” Washington said.
Throughout the years at the museum, Bianca’s title has changed several times, each one with new responsibilities. She says one of the things that keeps her there is her boss.
“It’s wonderful working here. I love working at the museum,” said Washington.
Bianca says life can be hard at times, but being a mother prevents her from giving up. In fact, one of her favorite quotes by Anthony is her mantra.
“A Susan B. quote that I would go by would be 'failure is impossible.' As a woman, I feel like we never fail. There’s room always to succeed with stuff, you know, you always want to try to do better, you might have did your best, but I feel like you can always do better,” Washington said.
