GREECE, N.Y. — It’s common for school-aged children to aspire to become great when they’re adults, but it’s rare to find some aspiring to own a business as a teenager.

Remote learning is in full swing for 8-year-old Isabella Newton of Greece.

  • Isabella Newton started baking with her mom at the age of 2

  • She wants to offer allergy-friendly baked goods

“It’s just much better without everyone yelling out, I don’t like loud noises, so it’s just so much easier without everyone yelling out in my class and I can actually focus more,” said Newton.

That focus comes in handy throughout the day because Bella is usually racing against the clock so she can tend to her passion.

“I’m done, mom can I bake now? Can I?" she asked her mom after finishing her remote learning for the day.

“I guess,” her mother said as Bella gave an excited "yay."

The 8-year-old has been baking since she was 2, originally helping her mom before taking things into her own hands. Bella now has her own corner in the kitchen with baking supplies and dishes.

“It’s just really fun and it’s something that I really enjoy doing. So I went up to my mom one day and I go 'I want to start a business, one day. I want to own a business.' And she goes 'why don’t we start now?' And I go, 'I’m only 8.' And she goes 'still, you can be 8 and own a business,'” said Bella.

While everything is usually handled by Bella, her mother Samantha Newton is usually not too far away and can help when needed. Usually, it involves tasks requiring someone taller to help.

“I’m so proud, I mean it doesn’t help when I’m trying to eat healthier, but I’m just really happy that she’s just so motivated, you know. She's constantly wanting to do it, constantly watching Youtube videos,” said Samantha Newton.

Bella has started efforts to eventually have her own baking business by the time she’s 16-years-old. In the meantime, she’s practicing with small orders, donating to area veterans and a battered women and children shelter in Rochester.

“There’s two certain reasons I like to do it, and one of them is because my uncle Brendan, he is a veteran, and now it just makes me sad that they don’t have much family to celebrate the holidays with and they don’t get to have so much fun. So I just like to bake and donate,” said Isabella Newton.

The 8-year-old also wants to make sure her bakery is allergy-friendly so everyone can enjoy baked goods.
