ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A University of Rochester graduate has won a Nobel Prize for his work that led to the discovery of the Hepatitis C Virus.

Dr. Harvey Alter's research focused on finding diagnostic tests and treatments for the disease.

Alter's work reduced the risk of catching Hepatitis C after receiving blood transfusions.

Two other scientists, American Charles M. Rice and British-born Michael Houghton, joined Alter in earning this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology.

Alter graduated from the U of R with his Bachelor's in 1956. He is the 13th graduate or faculty member to win the Nobel Prize.
