Gregory Wilson Jr. said he was sleeping when his mom woke him up to let him know that there was a fire. Wilson made sure his mom and 7-year-old sister were safe.
"I basically made sure they got out of the house. I rushed them out of the house. I basically slammed the door while the flames was coming upstairs," said Wilson.
They were standing on the second-floor roof of their house on Lake Avenue when, out of nowhere, John Allen came to the rescue.
"They were climbing out the window, two adults and one child, jumped on the porch and I told the lady ‘drop the kid, drop the kid.’ I caught the kid, ran her down to the tree," said Allen.
Wilson said Allen's quick actions helped save his family. He is forever thankful.
"This young gentleman right here is the hero. He caught my sister off the roof, and I appreciate him with my whole heart bro. I really do appreciate him," said Wilson.
"I don't even know the guy and I love him," said Allen.
Wilson said even though his house was damaged, he is happy that he and his family made it out alive because he said you can always replace property, but you can never replace human lives.
"Anything that's gone can be replaced. As long as everybody is OK, that's all that matters man," said Wilson.
Wilson's mom and sister were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for minor injuries. The fire is currently under investigation by the RFD.
As for Gregory and John, those moments have changed their lives forever.
