If you own a gun and live in Brighton, you're now required by law to lock it up.

The town board approved a local law Wednesday requiring firearm owners to secure their weapons either in a gun safe or with a trigger lock.

The law also requires gun owners to tell police if their weapon is stolen.

"What this law does not do is in any way restrict gun ownership. What it does is promote responsible gun ownership," said Brighton Town Supervisor Bill Moehle.

The Brighton Police Department is giving away a limited number of trigger locks for residents who need one.
