A series of bomb threats made across the nation launched law enforcement agencies into action Thursday.

The threats began to come into schools, government buildings and private businesses around noon. They were reported from coast to coast and forced temporary evacuations of buildings, institutions, and offices, and lockdowns at nearby schools.

Each threat was sent from an anonymous email in a similarly worded fashion, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Thirteen threats were reported in Monroe County, including at the Rochester Police Department and Strong Museum of Play.  Threats in Greece, Gates, Irondequoit and Brighton were also investigated.

None of the reported threats were found credible.

Shortly before 2 p.m., the Geneva Police Department responded to Geneva General Hospital complex for a reported bomb threat and within minutes the Ontario County Sheriff's Office also sent in a team.

The two departments worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigations to determine that it was not a legitimate threat.

Police also confirmed that several residents in Geneva received similar emails.

In a statement, the Geneva Police Department stressed that the threats were intended to instill panic and fear in an attempt to extort currency in the form of bitcoin.
