ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester man who was shot on the city’s west side early Friday morning has died.

Rochester police identified the victim as 23-year-old Tasmere Kenard.

Police were called to Lyell Avenue and Whitney Street just before 2 a.m. Friday for a call of shots fired and a reported assault.

When officers arrived they found Kenard with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died a short time later.

Police have gathered surveillance video from businesses on Lyell Avenue to help them in their investigation.

Kenard's family says he was expecting his first child.

"It's going to hurt another generation as well because it's going to be a child that's not going to have his father. That's one gift that we have from him but we don't have him to cherish right now," said Kenard’s uncle, Carl Canty.

No suspects have been arrested in connection to Kenard’s murder. According to RPD this is the first homicide in the city since July. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
