RIGA, N.Y. — A retired Monroe County Sheriff's Jail Deputy is dead after a crash in the town of Riga Tuesday.

The sheriff's office says Patrick Gaffney died at Strong Memorial Hospital shortly after the crash. He was a member of the jail bureau and retired only a couple months ago after a 22-year career.

According to deputies, Gaffney was traveling on Buffalo Road when a car going in the opposite direction turned into the path of his motorcycle.

The sheriff recounted Gaffney's last days before he retired.

"There's no other way to express it. This is just a sincere shock to us," said Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter (D). "The gentleman just came through the office in retirement mode two months ago with a big smile on his face looking forward to that retirement check that he earned so difficulty working in the jail for 22 years."

As for the investigation into the crash: The driver of the car was not hurt, but they were ticketed for failure to yield the right of way.
