The woman involved in a deadly crash that killed a bicyclist five years ago is headed to state prison for an unrelated drug conviction.
Megan Merkel was sentenced to three-and-a-half to seven years in prison for trying to smuggle heroin and a needle into the county jail last winter.
Merkel was convicted of several misdemeanors for her role in the 2012 crash that killed Heather Boyum on Route 250 in Penfield.
The Fairport teacher was a mother of two.
Merkel also faces drug charges in Ontario County, where she's accused of driving without a license and having crack cocaine.
