PALMYRA, N.Y. — At Historic Palmyra, there are five museums full of history, but also mystery.

"So this museum here is an old hotel," said Tracy Murphy, executive director of Historic Palmyra Museums. "This section is the 1898 section. It was known as Rifenburg's Hotel and Saloon. This place is pretty incredible and there are 23 rooms."

There is a history of creepy things going on in the building, especially in certain rooms.

"Right here on the wall, we have a gold frame," said Murphy. "And this actually has a hair wreath. And this hair wreath was made by Anna Jackson. She lived here in the village. And when she was a young girl, she started collecting her hair."

"One of my favorite rooms is probably the room in here, which is our mourning room," said Murphy

There is a mirror in the room that has someone staring back at you.

"That's Gloria," said Murphy. "She's been in mourning for many, many years. And that would be typical garb for someone who was mourning the loss of, say, their husband or their son or brother at the Civil War."

Our second stop on the tour was the Erie Canal Depot, sitting in an 1830s home.

"In the canal heyday, it was used for mules. The mules would actually come right up off the Erie Canal after working for four hours, or 15 miles, and they would go right into the basement," said Murphy.

Also part of Historic Palmyra is the Alling Coverlet Museum, which has the largest collection of American handwoven coverlets in the United States. The Palmyra Print Shop showcases some of the finest printing equipment used by John M. Jones, which revolutionized the industry. Finally, at the Phelps General Store & Residence, time stands still. Built in 1862, it served as a boarding house, tavern, bakery and general store.

At the general store, you can even find eggs that were originally sold there decades ago.

"Yes, those are the original eggs from 1940," said Murphy.

There is a lot of history in this town with five museums all in one destination in Palmyra, New York.
